How do you build a chicken coop? Have you ever wondered if a chicken coop plan could be a feather in your cap? Keep reading, and you’ll soon discover chicken coop blueprints, chicken coop plans, and before you know it, you’ll be wading around in healthy, fat clucking chickens.

The first thing you’ll need to remember when perusing chicken coop plans is that we humans aren’t the only species who find poultry delectable. While we are more civilized in the preparation of the meat of a chicken, there are predators out there (yes, even in the city) who will, upon nightfall, pounce upon your flock and care not of their manners, compassion, or the mess they will leave behind. You must build your chicken coop with predators in mind; otherwise, all you’ve done is ring the dinner bell for the wild.

If you have knowledge of nighttime predators in existence prior to building your coop, you can purchase a “hot wire” system, so that you and your chickens can sleep a little more safely. Just don’t forget to read all the materials that come along with this installation, as it’s the chickens’ drumsticks you want barbequed, not your own!

You’ll also want to carefully consider the location of your coop. You don’t want a bunch of rained out, wet chickens, so make sure you situate your structure on high groud. Chickens need sunshine too, so make sure the coop is positioned to face the south. Chicken coop plans will reinforce these necessities in the instructions.

Don’t chicken out on spending money on quality materials. Easy chicken coop plans don’t mean cheap chicken coop plans. You want your structure to last. You don’t want your chickens squawking, “The sky is falling!” You also want to treat your chickens humanely while they are alive and in your care. This means a decent home, sunshine and room to roam about.

As you research chicken coop plans, here are some more dos and don’ts as you plan to build your chicken coop:

Do:

1.Use hardwood floor, not sand, dirt or gravel.
2.Estimate about 4.2 feet per chicken when building.
3.If you are building during a cooler season, you must provide artificial light/heat, as damp wet chickens are not healthy and it’s also inhumane.

Don’t:

1.Stray from the chicken coop blueprint. Chicken coop plans are researched for maximum use and longevity of life.
2.Be afraid to peruse different chicken coop plans. Don’t grab the first one you see. Consider how many chickens you want to start with, and consider your landscape that goes with your design.

Key features of a successful chicken coop are cool (not cold!), dry climate, cleanliness, roominess, and a well-followed blueprint for your chicken coop plans.
